Seagate Backup Plus Slim – 2 TB Hard Drive HDD
Color: Black Brand: Seagate
There is nothing particularly noteworthy in Backup Plus Slim – its design is utilitarian and definitely not trying to win any prizes. Seagate chose a plastic frame with a slim thin metal cover on top. Unlike the Seagate logo and white status light, there is nothing striking here.
Released in summer 2015, the new Seagate Backup Plus has two versions, called the 0.5-inch Backup Plus Slim, and is available up to 2 TB in four colors including black, silver, blue, and red. The slightly thick (0.8 inch) 4TB version is called Seagate Backup Plus and is only available in black.
Other than that, the two are basically the same, these new drives will replace the original backup that was first released in 2014. This is part of Seagate’s efforts to transform its entire product lines with the new logo, introduced during CES 2015.
Seagate Backup Plus Slim is similar to the same size as other flash drives on the market, such as the recent revision of WD My Passport Ultra, and it’s one of the thinnest flash drives offering up to 2 terabytes. The 4 TB Seagate Backup Plus, despite its slightly thicker, is the first compact flash drive with 4 TB of storage space. Usually, you need a larger desktop drive to get more than 2 TB.
Note that Seagate also has Backup Plus Fast which also offers 4 TB, but this drive includes two internal drives inside, instead of just one.
Like most flash drives, the new Backup Plus / Slim flash drive is carrier supported. This means that it only needs one Micro-USB 3.0 port and comes with a standard USB cable. This cable will take care of both data and power connections when connecting the drive to a USB port on the computer.
On my test Slim 2TB worked fine with all the USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports that I tried. The engine has an aluminum casing that makes it feel very solid, although still very light.
Outside the box, the drive is formatted in an NTFS file system and immediately works with a Windows computer. However, you can download and install NTFS Driver for Mac to make it work with Mac devices without reformatting. If you want to reformat it in HFS + to work natively with Mac devices, you can use the HFS + driver for Windows to have your Windows computers read and write to Mac file system.
Like Backup Plus Fast, Backup Plus / Slim includes downloadable Seagate Dashboard backup software. There are three main backup functions: PC Backup, Mobile Backup, and Social. The PC backup part is basically local backup; Here you can either customize local backups in real time or allow the program by default to choose what to backup you.
After that, the drive will be backed up continuously when changes are made to the data. In my experiences, this job worked very well. Note that this part is only available for Windows. The Mac version of the software contains only two other functions.
Social provides a way to share your media on social networking sites, including Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, and vice versa, backing up media from those sites to the flash drive. Both Share and Save jobs did well on my test and were extremely easy to use.
Finally, you can also back up the content stored on your mobile device using the mobile backup function. You can do this with Fast using the free downloadable Seagate Mobile Backup app available for both iOS and Android devices.
Unlike WD My Passport, Seagate Backup Plus Slim does not come with an option to lock the drive contents. This means that if you lose it, anyone can access your information.
Compared to Backup Plus Fast, the new Plus / Slim backup is about half the speed, which is to be expected because Slim is only one drive while Fast is a RAID-0 drive. Compared to other similarly configured flash drives, the new Backup Plus / Slim is very impressive.
I tested both the 2 TB and 4 TB versions of the drive and it was absolutely amazing. Via USB 3.0, 4TB recorded continuous copy speeds of 114 Mbps and 121 Mbps or write and read, respectively, and 2 TB drive scored slightly better at 119 Mbps and 125 Mbps, respectively. Among the single-drive hard disk drives, these are the best offers.
With USB 2.0, the average drive was between 28 Mbps and 30 Mbps. So to get the most out of its performance, you want to use it with USB 3.0. Like Fast, Backup Plus / Slim also works very well in my test, as it doesn’t make noise, vibrations, or heat.
Seagate Backup Plus / Slim is one of the most convenient ways to back up your data, at home or on the go. The fact that the drive has the maximum capacity, especially the 4 TB version, means that the storage gap between the flash drive and the desktop is no longer a problem. Sure, you can get a desktop drive with more capacities, but 4 TB is a lot of space and most of us don’t need more than they were on the go.
My only concern with the drive is that it comes with a short two-year warranty and insecurity. For this reason, if you intend to store sensitive data for backup, I recommend
