Over the past few years, the JBL Clip series has been one of the best options if you’re looking for a powerful little speaker that won’t break the bank. The last one is Clip 3, which preserved the best aspects of the previous clip 2 and improved some of its most important features. But how much has it actually improved? Let’s find out.

Who is JBL Clip 3 for?

Hikers. If you like camping or hiking, you probably already have a climbing hoop or two, but this one has a speaker on the other end of it. I mean, come on.

Podcast listeners. Clip 3 definitely lacks the low end due to its small size, but the focus on singing makes it a solid choice for anyone who just wants to listen to a podcast while doing their business.

What does using JBL Clip 3 look like?

At first glance, there isn’t much difference between the new JBL Clip 3 and the previous version, but then you look a little closer and notice the subtle differences. Sure, it still has a carabiner, but unlike the Clip 2 – this one is built into the frame of the speaker rather than being a small metal triangle suspended by some hard plastic.

The JBL Clip 3 still has the same three trigger buttons as the previous model, but you will now find them integrated into the front fabric of the speaker rather than small indents around the edge. With its latest model, JBL appears to have a coherent design language across its products now that the buttons are compatible with other speakers in the product range. The biggest upgrade takes place around the back of the speaker, which is now hard plastic instead of the 3.5mm cable cutout. Especially since there is still a 3.5mm input so if you want to plug in, all you have to do is provide your cable.

Is the JBL Clip 3 waterproof?

You probably aren’t getting the JBL Clip 3 depending on whether or not it has an audio cable connected, so you’ll be pleased to know that this speaker is as powerful as its predecessors. One of the best features of the Clip 3 is that it is actually waterproof. You can fully submerge it up to 1 meter of water if needed thanks to the IPX7 construction, and a carabiner in the frame gives it a more solid feel overall.

Not that I was concerned about ripping the old-fashioned hard plastic, but the new design offers less moving parts which is always a good thing for devices meant to be hit. In addition, the climbing ring feels sturdy and does not feel loose at all. Weighing just 222g, it is the perfect hiking companion if you want to hang it from your bag, or even if you just want to hang it from a wah shower head.

How to pair with JBL Clip 3?

Pairing with the JBL Clip 3 is very simple. All you have to do is turn it on by pressing the Bluetooth button along the side of the speaker. From there you can find the speaker in your Bluetooth settings in order to connect to it. If you are having problems and want to completely reset the speaker, then things get a little tricky. First you need to turn on the amplifier by pressing the power button.

Wait for the volume to turn on which means the speaker is on then press and hold the power button and the volume up button at the same time. The indicator light should begin to flash between white and red before the speaker is turned off. You should have completed the factory reset by doing this and then you can just turn on the speaker and pair with it by pressing the Bluetooth button as if it was a new device.

Design

The design is a welcome improvement in my opinion only due to the general look and feel of the product, but the battery life is the biggest improvement. JBL says you’ll get approximately ten hours of continuous playback, but in our tests, we were able to push this to 16 hours and 11 minutes with a steady output of 75 dB which is pretty impressive. It’s worth noting, however, that if you’re outside, you’ll likely play music at a higher output for easier listening – so you should expect battery life to be affected accordingly.

How to charge the JBL Clip 3

One downside to note is that it only charges via microUSB which is a problem for a recent product release, even at this price point. In order to charge the speaker you will need a microUSB cable (fortunately there is a cable included with the speaker). Connect the standard USB end of the cable to any of the USB charging brick and then locate the micro USB insert under the plastic cap along the headphone button.

Sound Quality.

The audio quality in JBL Clip doesn’t seem to differ much from previous releases, so if you’ve ever listened or listened to one of them before, you know what to expect. The speaker does very well with moderators and listening to songs like Swans and the Swimming by Iron & Wine, I didn’t feel like I was missing out very much. The guitars and singing come loud and clear, and while it struggles with clarity when there are more songs, I have found it perfect for relaxing vocal songs as well as podcasts.

Now if you want to listen to heavy bass music this will be disappointing. There’s a sharp drop in frequency response when it comes to the low end, and the amazing bass sound of Kids with Guns by Gorillaz ended up sounding like something in the middle of the bottom sound rather than the bass.

However, it’s hard to expect so much more from something so small. Likewise, the elevations will not be too detailed and tend to appear more subtle and less pronounced.
