Design

The design of the AmazonBasics microwave does not stand out as anything too bright or different from any other microwaves. It’s one of the smart home devices that blends perfectly with the rest of your home, and I love it.

In almost every microwave, you need to manually reset the watch when the power is off and change the watch during daylight saving time. Since AmazonBasics Microwave is online, it automatically adjusts time on its own. This may sound like a small feature, but it’s one of those quality life things that is nice to have and something I will miss when I go back to using the dumb microwave.

Alexa Integration

After a simple setup using the Alexa app on your phone, you can control the microwave without using hands with voice commands. Some examples include:

• Alexa, turn on the microwave for two minutes
• Alexa, reheat one cup of coffee
• Alexa, microwave 1.5 ounce of popcorn
• Alexa, add 30 seconds to the microwave

When these commands work, they work well. Alexa is usually quick to understand your command and perform the required procedure quickly. If your hands are dirty from something that you cook or want to control from the other room, this may be very helpful in the right scenario.

Last but not least, you can have the microwave automatically rearrange the popcorn as you run out. This is determined based on the number of times you use the popcorn button or order your own microwave and popcorn (managed via your Amazon account). When you order more popcorn automatically, you will get 10% discount. Not sure I will ever use this, but fun though.

Even if Alexa integration doesn’t always work the way I want it, you’re getting a much more powerful microwave without spending significantly more money for something very limited to what it can do.

I’d like to see Alexa’s performance become more reliable with software updates, as well as a bigger microwave in the future, but for now, this is a good start.
