WD 1TB Passport Size External Hard Drive
Color: Black Brand: Western Digital
Description And Features
In India, WD released only four of six colors that appeared when the My Passport group first appeared internationally. We’re losing the most recognizable, orange and yellow, leaving white, black, red and blue – the same as the current My Passport Ultra range. We received a white unit for review.
The new design is unlike anything that WD had done before, and is a complete departure from book-shaped units that inspired original Passport names. Everything from the drives themselves to the new packaging was created by fuseproject, a design company founded by legendary Yves Behar.
Each drive is visually divided into two halves, with the upper half completely easy and the lower half having a diagonal shell pattern. The idea of all this dazzled us, but while it’s nice to look at, he’s actually doing nothing while driving.
In fact, we are not sure we would prefer this design over the traditional My Passport look. For one reason, the edges and corners are sharp, making the new drive less comfortable in the pocket or hand. There is also the fact that the plastic is highly polished, and the glossy white revision unit picked up lint and smudges within minutes of unloading them.
New drives are 1mm thicker than their predecessors, but the other dimensions haven’t changed. WD does not publish model weight, but retail listings show that new weight is around 15 grams. Although this is hardly noticeable, mainly the lack of rounded edges makes it look larger.
New My Passport drives use the popular Micro-USB 3.0 connector, and although this is not a problem, this redesign may be an opportunity to move to USB Type-C. The port and white LED are on one side, and the other sides are empty. Four small rubber feet keep the drive firm on the table, and while you can balance these units on their sides, we recommend this, especially during use.
WD is selling the new My Passport in flavors of 1 TB, 2 TB, 3 TB and 4 TB. All are pre-formatted in NTFS but can be easily reformatted if you are using a Mac. You can get a short USB 3.0 cable in the box, in the same color as the drive. The specifications for the drive itself have not been released, but diagnostics have shown that our unit spins at 5,400 rpm.
We measured read and write speeds using SiSoft SANDRA 2016, which showed a sequential reading of 120.38 Mbps and 87.66 Mbps in sequential write operations. Random read and write speeds are more accurate in reversing how hard drives handle many small files, and these scores were 112.66 Mbps and 142.17 Mbps respectively.
We tested WD My Passport on our standard test bench with the following components:
- Intel Core i7-6700K processor.
- Gigabyte Z170XGaming 7 motherboard.
- 2 x 8 GB, Corsair DDR4-3200 RAM.
- Nico Nitro Radeon RX 460 OC graphics card.
- 256 GB Samsung SSD 950 Pro.
- Cooler Master Hyper 212X cooler..
- Corsair RM650 power supply.
- Asus PB287Q 4K screen.
- Windows 10 operating system.
The focus is on the program, and WD ships three Windows tools on the same drive. WD Drive Utilities allow you to perform a quick SMART status scan as well as run diagnostic tests. You can choose to scan for minor issues only or check each sector separately – which takes several hours on a drive of this size.
The tool also allows you to erase the contents of your drive, although the documentation does not indicate whether the data is erased and replaced safely. Finally, you can disable the My Passport LED and choose how long to wait before turning around to save energy. For some reason, you cannot alter the encryption or change the drive name of this tool.
This is where WD Security comes in. This is a separate program that enables you to set up a 256-bit hardware encryption feature on your drive. You must specify a password, but you can also tell the program to recognize that it is connected to the same PC using the Windows user account that you set it up, and to decrypt itself automatically.
There is a warning that there is no way to recover the password if you forget it, and that encryption does not prevent reformatting the drive – you may lose your data, but at least you can take steps to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.
The drive will lock automatically when you eject it or shut down the computer while still connected. Interestingly, you don’t have to install WD Security on every computer you use the drive with. Upon encryption, a small, unencrypted virtual CD drive is created and appears in Windows Explorer as a separate drive.
You’ll find an executable called WD Drive Unlock, which does exactly what its name suggests. If anyone enters the wrong password five times, they will be prompted to remove it or erase it. This means that your data will be destroyed, making it private again, if not safe.
WD Backup is a very basic folder sync tool. Lets you select folders on your computer for backup. The scheduler only has three options: hourly, daily, and monthly. The tool can also sync with or from a Dropbox account.
Hard drives are sold at a much lower price than official MRPs in India, and the new WD My Passport series is no exception. For example, 1 TB units are sold in the market for their poster price . However, older models are still available for a few rupees. All that comes with the design. If you like the look of these new drives, by all means, go ahead and pick one. If the value is more important, choose which one you can find for the lowest price, because you will not lose anything by buying an older model instead.
- Good performance.
- Sounds striking.
- Lots of bundled programs.
- Sharp corners and edges.
- Not much better than lower priced models.
