Specification And Features
Essentially, the items are WD’s answer to the Seagate Expansion Drive. Both are low cost, high capacity USB 3.0 external hard drives and easy to use.
From the outside, the elements look similar to the advanced WD flash drives, such as the WD My Passport Slim, with rounded corners and a smoothly finished surface. The CD drive measures 4.4 x 3.2 x0.8 inches (11.2 x 8.1 x 2.0 cm), and it’s small enough to fit easily into your pocket. Compared to Seagate expansion, it’s a little shorter and thicker, but overall it looks better.
However, on the inside, it has a standard low-power portable flash drive that spins at only 5400 rpm, which is slower than drives that spin at 7200 rpm. This generally translates into slower performance. The drive does not support security encryption, which means that no sensitive data should be placed on it.
Outside the box, the items come with a standard Micro-USB 3.0 cable with a foot length and nothing else. But you don’t need anything else to make it work as well.
The drive is pre-formatted for Windows and will work instantly when connected. For Mac OS, you will need to reformat it to HFS +. You can also configure it for exFAT file systems if you want to use it interchangeably between Windows and Mac computers.
Multipurpose
A lack of features can be a good thing. This type of naked bone design means the drive can work anywhere. For example, a password-protected drive will need its host to run a program to enable you to type the password before it can connect. The item does not require anything from the host at all, other than the USB port.
Aside from Windows and Mac computers, where items worked without any issues, I also tried them with a few non-PC hosts; Proved to be compatible there too. On Xbox One, the drive is instantly recognized as soon as it’s connected and once it’s configured with a game console, I can use it to store games, apps and content to play. The component also worked well with routers and media network media players.
Performance
Since Element has a low-power internal drive, I didn’t expect it to amaze me with its performance, but the drive was good at testing though. Via USB 3.0, it recorded a sustained real-time copy speed of over 95MBps for writing and over 100MBps for reading. However, this was about 20 Mbps slower than that in Seagate’s expansion. But in general, these were the average speeds for a USB 3.0 flash drives, and it’s fast enough for all applications requiring external storage, including movie playback, backup and app storage.
Verdict
The WD Elements mobile drive is an excellent alternative to Seagate expansion. While the two drives are very similar in most respects, the expansion is faster but the item is cheaper. Also, in my opinion, the items look a little better.
In the end, this is a fast, easy to use and versatile flash drive that can easily add more storage, not only to computers but also to game consoles and other types of USB-supported hosts. If you don’t plan to use it to store sensitive data, this is an excellent drive to choose.
On the other hand, if keeping your data safe from prying eyes in case of loss or theft is a major concern, then another drive, such as Seagate Backup Plus Slim or WD My Passport Slim, better suits your needs. I am personally very happy with the WD Elements Portable Engine and I have no problems recommending it to most people.
