Boult Audio AirBass TrueBuds True Wireless
Color: Red Brand: Boult Audio
The budget true wireless segment is a rapidly booming market in the audio industry with several companies such as Noise, Realme, Boat, and Redmi offering a plethora of options. Boult Audio’s new true wireless offering, Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds are looking to establish themselves in the category as a lucrative option. With features like aptX support, IPX5 rating, and more, Airbass Livebuds is truly an option that should not be overlooked by the price-conscious consumer. However, how do these headphones work in the real world and what is their sound quality.
Build and design
The Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds has a compact and compact design and is a lot of fun to look at. The pill-shaped charging case is one of the smallest we’ve reviewed so far and it’s also one of the lightest. Despite the budget price point, the materials on the box look very interesting. They have a stretchy fabric with textured line design on top of the case. The Boult Audio logo is also featured on the top of the case in white.
The back of the charging case features a micro-USB port and the bottom has a dome that allows the case to sit firmly on surfaces. The magnets inside the case are strong, however, and the plastic hinge mechanism for opening and closing the case feels a bit flimsy.
There are also four LED drop lights that indicate the charging case’s battery levels. Its design is unique and aesthetically pleasing. The indents of the earbuds on the top cover of the case are covered with thin foam material while the rest of the internals are also made of plastic.
The earbuds have a rectangular shape and look very elegant and streamlined. The earbuds are slanted significantly making the earphones very comfortable to wear, even for long periods of use. Boult Audio also offers three additional pairs of silicone ear cups which ensure most users get the best fit possible.
The top of each speaker contains a physical button that is used for music and call controls. So, you can use these multi-function buttons to pause/play music, search for tracks, increase and decrease the volume, answer/reject calls, and even summon the voice assistant for your phone. The controls are simple and intuitive, however, the buttons need to be pressed a little further causing the buds to dig into your ear.
The fit is fairly comfortable, however, as the lack of ear hooks or wings and the tips with a top angle can cause them to slip when exercising or running. However, they did stay in their position during light to moderate activities like walking around the house and even light jogging. It’s also IPX5 rated so it’s sweat and light stain resistant.
You wouldn’t expect these headphones to host a lot of features. And they don’t. However, it is equipped with some basic features and even some surprising ones at this cost. Firstly, it is powered by Bluetooth v5.0 and has a Bluetooth transmission range of 10 meters or 33 feet. This is impressive for TWS budget solutions since Bluetooth 4.2 is usually found on TWS budget products.
Another great feature is the great battery life. Given the small size of both the charging case and the earbuds, you wouldn’t expect these headphones to have impressive battery life. But they do. According to the company, the earbuds come with a battery life of 6 hours on the headphones alone, and 24 hours in total including the charging case, which is impressive.
In our tests, the earbuds played music for about 5 and a half hours on one charge, and the case offered three full additional charges. The only disappointment with the battery and front charging is the inclusion of a micro-USB charging cable in place of the Type-C cable.
Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds headphones also come with Qualcomm aptX HD audio support, which is very profitable in budget true wireless earbuds. Additionally, they are also IPX5 rated (as mentioned above), come with physical controls for playing music and calls, and come with voice assistant support.
Boasting a warm audio profile, Boult Audio Airbass Livebuds have very good sound quality for the price point. Qualcomm aptX support definitely helps provide the earphones with a relatively complete and balanced sound. The middle lyrics are detailed enough, the vocals are clear and well highlighted, and the elevations are not too small. However, the low and bass response, while energetic and powerful, can sound muddy at times.
In Pull me Under by Dream Theater, the bass sounds strong and muddled and degrades the overall quality of the track, although the mid-frequency sounds and instruments are produced very well. Audio tracks like Hello by Adele are the most well-reproduced tracks on these headphones with sharp and accurate audio reproduction.
The bass response in Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars is very energetic but it can cast a shadow over the medium due to its muddy nature. There is also bass distortion when volume levels are on the higher side. However, some bass-heads might enjoy the booming boult Audio Airbass Livebuds.
The soundstage on these headphones is surprisingly spacious and filming is very good as well. Musical instruments are easily distinguishable on the busy tracks and tracks such as the California Hotel look great with wide grading. Negative isolation is also great because of the warm fit.
However, the microphone quality is disappointing as the caller’s voice is muffled and distorted on many occasions. Also, we ran into a bunch of connectivity issues even though these headphones had Bluetooth v5.0. The two notable connectivity issues we ran into were – the earbuds were disconnected from time to time from the source completely and only would connect again when we did it manually in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, and the earbuds sometimes remained connected to the phone even when placed in the case, despite the lid closed.
There’s a lot to love about these small and humble speakers than true wireless earphones, including the built-in charging case and headphones, support for aptX and voice assistant, a warm new audio profile, and an IPX5 rating. However, it does come with its fair share of hurdles like the sometimes choppy calling, muddy dips, and disappointing microphone performance.
- Compact charging case and comfortable earphones.
- AptX codec support.
- Good battery life.
- Bottoms are slightly muddy.
- Poor microphone quality.
- Communication obstacles.
