The internal storage of the expansion is a low-power motor that rotates at only 5,400 rpm, and not at 7,200 rpm. Slow rotation speed is generally translated into slower performance (not in this case; more on that later) but at the same time it also means lower power consumption.

The expansion is shipped in a close sale package that includes the same drive and a standard long Micro-USB 3.0 cable. But this is all you need to get started. Like all portable drives, the expansion is carrier-driven, and requires only one cable for both data and power.

Out of the box, expansion is pre-configured in NTFS to work properly with a Windows PC. You can also easily reformat it to HFS + to work with a Mac, a process that takes just a few seconds. In fact, I generally find buying a drive like this a much cheaper way to get storage space for your Mac than buying a dedicated Mac drive, which is generally more expensive.

If you want to use Seagate Expansion interchangeably in a mixed Windows and Mac environment, you can also format it using the exFAT file system. Aside from computers, the drive will also work with other famous hosts, such as game consoles or media players.

Just make sure it is formatted first in the supported file system. I tried it with Xbox One and it worked very well. The drive is recognized quickly and I can use it to save games and applications, as well as to store media for playback.

Verdict

Seagate Expansion flash drive copies files quickly and saves a lot of storage space for money. It’s also small enough to fit in your pocket, and its no-frills approach makes it easy to use with both computers and gaming devices.
